light of mine.

Each year, my dad puts together a holiday compilation album. It harkens back to the days of the mixed tapes with a little bit of this and a little bit of that with a whole lot of thought and planning thrown in. Last year's holiday album featured a rendition of This Little Light of Mine and I must admit that one year later I have listened to that particular song about twenty bazillion times (yes, that is a real number).
In so many different versions of that song, there's a rock out sensibility to a very simple set of lyrics. And, when the artist tears into the sheer volume and exhuberant galloping of its pace at the halfway mark, it never fails to send an electric tingle through my spine. A good version of that song leaves you happily exhausted and grinning from ear to ear. Bruce Springsteen does just that in the version he performed live in Dublin (above).
(Two other great renditions are sung by Joss Stone and Buick Audra on the album 'Oh happy day' and by Mavis Staples on the album 'We'll never turn back')
